1. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Algebra/Geometry I emphasizes the learning of mathematics through problem solving, discovery, communication, and reasoning. This course stresses the connections between mathematical topics and the connection between mathematics and other disciplines. Algebra/Geometry I explores topics including surface area, volume, linear equations and models, exponential equations and growth rate, direct and inverse proportions, introductory probability, similarity, the Fundamental Counting Principle and inequalities.

2. COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Your marking period grade well be determined by daily assignments, labs, notebook grades, weekly quizzes, and chapter tests.

Participation in class is a must! Your attention in class will directly influence your level of understanding and therefore your grade. Math is not a spectator sport!!

3. GRADING POLICY:

Your homework grade will be determined by using graded daily assignments and notebook grades. Daily assignments will be graded on a scale of 0-10 based on the quality of the effort shown, not on the number of correct problems. Homework is a practice time not a testing time. Notebooks will be graded throughout each quarter.

Your marking period grade will be determined in the following manner:

50 % tests 30% quizzes 20% homework

The following scale will then be used:

A 93-100 B+ 87-89 C+ 77-79 D+ 67-69

A- 90-92 B 83-86 C 73-76 D 63-66

B- 80-82 C- 70-72 D- 60-62

Each semester grade will be calculated in this way:

Each quarter grade is 40%

The exam grade is 20%

* *To pass this course, two of the three grades above must be passing. Additionally, you must earn at least a .53 g.p.a. (on a 4 point scale) to earn credit in this course.

4. FEEDBACK:

All assignments will be returned in a timely manner, with a grade and appropriate comments.

All quizzes and tests will be returned in a reasonable amount of time with correct answers given orally or in writing.

PROGRESS SHOULD BE MONITORED ON MISTAR!

MAKE UP WORK:

Work missed due to an absence must be made up in the number of days absent. Late work will be accepted up to one day after its due date. Half credit will be the maximum points possible on late work unless it is turned in with a homework pass. Homework passes will be given for 5 assignments per quarter and must be used to receive full credit on completed late assignments.

Assignments will be posted on www.mrsmeyerphs.weebly.com.

All tests and quizzes must be made up on the day of your return. If you miss more than the day of the test or quiz, arrangements must be made with me for make-up.

6. EXTRA HELP:

Help sessions will be available on Mondays and Wednesdays after school until 3:15 and in the mornings at 7:10. Please never hesitate to ask for help!!

7. CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:

We will be following the “3 C ‘s Policy” this year. Character, Commitment, and Courtesy will be stressed at all times. All Student Handbook policies will be followed in class as well.

Cell phones may NOT be used as calculators!

8. SPECIAL MATERIALS:

The following should be available at home and brought to class every day:

-1 1/2 “ or larger three ring binder with 5 tabbed dividers to be used Algebra/Geometry I only

-Recommended: Graphing calculator, TI 83 plus. Cell phones may NOT be used as calculators. See me immediately if you need to borrow one for the year and I will get you the appropriate paper work.
